SCIENCE-SPECIFIC WRITING SKILLS TO ENHANCE STUDENT UNDERSTANDING
FEE: $45
Stephen Best – Nancy Williams, University of Michigan
Location: Radisson Hotel – Capital 4
Do your students know the difference between a definition and a description?
Are you disappointed with your students’ explanations of science concepts?
Do students effectively communicate their understanding of science concepts in their writing?
Research suggests that students struggle with these writing skills in science for a variety of reasons. However, there are strategies you can use to encourage and enhance student writing.
In this workshop, we will address essential communication skills for science for elementary and middle school students (grades 3-8). Teachers in this workshop will focus on four specific skills that often challenge students:
- description
- definition
- explanation
- comparison
Participants in the session will receive a binder with a variety of writing resources for science, including templates and strategies to help address these issues, and will develop personalized resources they can use immediately in their classrooms. This session will focus on writing strategies and the inquiry process learning skills from the GLCE’s and HSCE’s. (Includes lunch and refreshments).
